Asphalt shingles are the most common material used for residential roofs in America. As such, if you have an asphalt shingle roof, you are certainly not alone. In some cases, it can be obvious that you need a roofing repair to your asphalt shingle roof, such as noticing missing shingles or cracked shingles. But, in most cases, the signs are not as obvious. Here are three of the lesser-known signs that your asphalt shingle roof may be in need of repairs.

Your Asphalt Shingles Look Shiny

One of the lesser-known signs that you may need a roofing repair for your asphalt shingles is that your asphalt shingles look shiny when the sun hits them. The outermost layer of an asphalt shingle is coated in asphalt granules. If the shingle or shingles start to become damaged, either due to excessive rain, sitting water, hail, pests, or tree limbs rubbing on the shingles, the granules start to fall off the shingle. This exposes the fiberglass mat that is beneath those shingles. Fiberglass reflects the sun's light, and you may notice that some of your shingles look shiny.

You Notice Black Spots on Your Roof

Another sign that may indicate that you need roofing repairs for your asphalt shingle roof is black spots on the roof. The most common reason why black spots may be present is due to mildew or mold growth. Both mildew and mold can be damaging to your shingles and can cause them to crack. As such, you need to have your roof cleaned and may need repairs to determine why the mold or mildew was growing in the first place.

Your Asphalt Shingles Are Not Flat or Flush Against the Roof

The last sign that indicates that you may need asphalt shingle roofing repairs is asphalt shingles that are not flat or flush against the roof. This may include shingles that have edges starting to curl upward, shingles that are buckling, or shingles that lift upwards on windy days. If your shingles are not flush against the decking of your roof, you have a problem that needs to be repaired.

If you notice that your shingles look shiny, you notice black spots on your roof or you notice that your asphalt shingles are not flat or flush against your roof, you are in need of a roofing repair.
