There are a number of signs that you can look for when it comes to roof damage. Some of these are easier to spot than others. So, when it comes to roof damage signs that aren't as obvious, what should you be looking for? Here is what you should know.

Animals on the Roof

You may not think that animals on your roof would be something that would alert you to potential roof damage, but this actually signals the need for immediate attention. Wild animals often look for damaged areas on a roof for a place to hide and stay safe. So, if you notice that animals are running around on your roof, then this is a sign that your roof may have sustained damage and is at risk for further damage.

Black Spots on the Roof

The majority of homeowners tend to ignore minor signs of damage like black spots. Black spots don't seem like they would be a big issue and also appear to be quite common. However, they can be quite dangerous. Black spots also require immediate repair. If you decide to ignore these signs of damage, the problem will worsen. As a result, your roof and home could be prone to much larger leaks and mold issues.

Buckling Shingles

It is quite easy to notice if your roof is missing any shingles, but it is a bit harder to determine if you have shingles that are buckling. Although buckling shingles may be easier to identify than some types of damage, you may find that you need to actually be on top of your roof in order to do so. To ensure that this particular problem is identified, inspect your roof once or twice per year. In general, it is better if you schedule a professional roofing contractor to perform the inspection.

Nails in Your Gutters

If you notice nails in your gutters or along the edge of your roof or home, this could be a sign that you have an issue somewhere with your roof. For one reason or another, possibly high winds, the nails came up. Often, they roll down the slope of the roof and catch along the edge, rolling all the way off or getting caught in the gutters. This damage will also need to be remedied.

As you can see, it isn't always easy to spot roof damage. For this reason, it is important to schedule routine inspections with a roofing contractor. For more information, contact a local roofing company.
